Tour of the private exhibition 天下無双の盆栽個展

One of famous Bonsai collectors invited us his private exhibition. He is also one of important client for Kouka-en. He held the exhibition to commemorate his seventy years of age at Daitokuji temple in Kyoto.
有名な盆栽コレクターであり、光華園のお客様でもあるYさんの個展に親方が連れて行って下さいました。Yさんの古希記念に、京都大徳寺の芳春院を貸しきりで関係者のみが入場できるという完全プライベートです。

When we entered the front gate, red pine was standing and welcomed us. The long stone path ran to Kato-mado. Kato is flame and Mado is window in Japanese. In this case, Kato–mado means the window has the shape of flame. Sunlight poured through the window, making shadow picture of Hinoki cypress.
芳春院の門をくぐると見事な赤松に迎えられ、先へと続く長い石畳は火灯窓まで続いており、木漏れ日がやんわりと注ぎ込む窓の前にはまるで影絵の様なヒノキが静かに佇んでいました。

We went through the front desk and went to next room. Then, there were the marvels of nature on each Bonsai pots. Some trees used to be at Kouka-en, but the pots had changed to different ones. Those pots matched to the trees and made the trees even better than before.
受付を終えてから隣の部屋に進むと、思わず息を飲むような大自然が盆上に並び連ねていました。かつて光華園にあった樹が別の鉢に植えられていて、それがまた見事に調和しており、以前より格段に優れていたのです。

There are many rooms in the temple and I admired whenever I entered any rooms. All trees are very old. I have seen very old awesome trees, like those trees, in only books.
I was impressed to see those trees directly.
御堂には沢山の部屋があり、各部屋に入るたびに思わず嘆声をもらしてしまいます。どの樹も本当に古くて、ここまでなるのに一体どれ程年月がかかったのか不思議で深く感心しました。本でしか見たことがないような一級品をお目にかかることができて、大変に有難く本当に嬉しかったです。

There was no a dazzling light in temple. Sunlight come into room and makes world of the subtle and profound. There were Bonsai quietly but that had surely a presence in dim room. I saw and felt Wabi-Sabi there. Wabi-Sabi is one of Japanese aesthetic consciousness.  Look at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi
御堂の中には派手な照明はありません。外の光が部屋の中に入り込むと、そこには幽玄の世界が創りだされ、ぼんやりとした薄暗い部屋の中に情趣ある盆栽が存在し、日本の美意識の侘寂がありました。
昔の人もこうやって盆栽を眺めていたのだろうと思うと感極まり、自分の目の前にある美しき日本文化を誇りに思いました。

His collection was perfect. The tree, the pot, the stand, the display are all the best for each other. I applaud and respect his effort. He would cost enormous time and money for them. I admire his passion and sense of Bonsai and appreciate his hospitality. Needless to say, this is the best exhibition.
Yさんのコレクションは一言でいうと「パーフェクト」でした。樹、鉢、卓、飾り、どれも完璧で、更に凄いところはそれらが見事に調和している点です。これだけ揃えるのには莫大な時間・手間・お金がかかり、さぞかし大変だったことでしょう。Yさんの盆栽に対する情熱と感性と客人に対する温かいおもてなしを礼讃し、言うまでもなく最高の個展でした。

Happy Valentine's Day バレンタインデー

Feb. 14th is Valentine's Day when woman gives chocolate to man in Japan. And then girl tell someone she loves him. Woman also gives chocolate for someone out of a sense of social obligation.

Department and store make special chocolate booth for Valentine's Day. Women come and buy expensive special chocolate for the special day. 

Mar. 14th is called White day. Man who received chocolate at Valentine's Day must give something in return. For example, candy, marshmallow and so on.

School boys compete with their friends the next day how many chocolates they got. Of cause, the most handsome boy in the class room usually get the most chocolates.

I gave chocolates Oyakata (boss) and apprentices last year. I think it’s difficult to do this year because Oyakata and one of apprentices have been to Kokufu exhibition.

I bought some chocolates for myself. These are my favorite chocolates “Tim Tam”. I also love any Swiss and Belgium chocolates.

Gafu-ten 2015 / 第40回 雅風展

Shohin Bonsai exhibition took place in Kyoto in January.
If you want to improve your Bonsai skill, I recommend you to go to exhibition and look really high quality trees. Here at Kouka-en, we don’t have a lot of Shohin Bonsai nor don’t display those. Shohin Bonsai is brand new for me, so I was looking forward to seeing it.


小品盆栽の展示会が京都の「みやこめっせ」で開かれました。
盆栽を上達したいなら、レベルの高い実物を見るのが一番です。
光華園では中品や大品が中心のため小品は少なく、またそれらを飾ることもありません。
私にとって小品盆栽はこれまでに見たことがない真新しい盆栽であり、どんなものかワクワクしながら行きました。


When I entered the place, I saw many display booths and trees were displayed beautifully on the shelf in each booths. I guess everybody would think “ Lovely! ”. The small trees radiated infinite fascination.

雅風展の会場に入ると、障子で区切られた席がずらりと並び、その一席内にいくつもの小さな盆栽が飾り棚上に綺麗に飾られていました。そこにいる誰もが「かわいい！」と思える程、愛らしい小さな世界が広がっていました。


There are some rules of Shohin display:

• Different species and style
• Different shape and color of pot
• Color of fruit and pot shouldn’t be the same
• Each tree shouldn’t be the same height ( Use display stand, so you can change the height)

小品盆栽の飾り方にはいくつかルールがあります。

• 異なる樹種・樹形
• 異なる鉢の形・色
• 実と鉢の色が同じにならないようにする
• 樹高の高さが同じにならないようする（→卓を使って高さを変えることで解消できる）

After knowing those rules, you would be very impressed by harmony of tree, accent plant and display stand. As Shohin Bonsai is totally designed whole harmony, I think Shohin Bonsai is “This is Bonsai.” I imagine that the owner would think “the pot is good on the tree. I should put the tree here rather than over there.” After imagining so, I admire those trees sincerely and tree looks lovelier.

これを踏まえて各席を鑑賞すると、樹は勿論の事、鉢・下草・卓との調和に感動させられます。
樹の幹や枝ぶりだけを鑑賞するのと違い、鉢・卓・飾りを包括的にデザインする小品盆栽は「This is Bonsai.」だと思いました。この日の為にオーナーさん達は、この樹にはこの鉢が似合うかなとか、この樹はこの位置の方がいいかなと色々と考えられたことでしょう。それを思うと尚更、愛おしく立派に思えてなりません。

I heard that many people give up big size of Bonsai and start small size. I think the one of the reason is Shohin pot. Since there are so many colorful, painting, unique Shohin pot, it stands to reason. And I’m one of the people who are really into pot. Of course, people want to display their favorite tree with great pot.

大きなサイズの盆栽を辞めて、小さなサイズの盆栽に移りハマっている人は沢山いると聞きます。その理由の一つが鉢にあると考えます。カラフル・絵付け・ユニークな形が多い小品鉢は、ハマる人は多いはず。私もその内の一人です。丹精込めて育ててきた樹だから、いい鉢に入れてあげたいと思うのは当然の親心です。

Shohin pot artist contest

I think the best advantage of Gafu-ten is to see pot artist. It was awesome to see all those pot artists which I only knew from their seals and stamps. Finally, I met Haruyoshi and Juko in person. They were sincere and clement that’s why I think their pots are high quality and trusted. A lot of people were curious and looked at Juko’s demonstration.

さて、雅風展は鉢作家さんに出会えるというのが最大の（!?）魅力ではないでしょうか。
馴染みのある落款、自分のお気に入りの鉢を作られた作家さん御本人に出会えるというのは、卒倒しそうなくらい超嬉しいことです。憧れのスーパースターが目の前にいて、その方とお話ができるって最高です。今回、お会いした春喜さんと樹晃さんは大変誠実で温和な方で、やはりその方たちが作り出す鉢というのは高品質で信頼のおける確かなものです。樹晃さんのデモンストレーションには、沢山の人だかりができていました。

Nowadays, Shohin Bonsai is popular in Japan.  I could see from a lot of numbers of display, many shops, and guests at Gafu-ten. It motivated me to start Shohin display.

小品盆栽を見て「私も盆栽を初めてみようかな」と思う人は多いと思います。それは席数の多さや来場者数にも表れていましたし、何よりも私が小品盆栽を飾りたいと夢中になりました。

After 34th Taikan exhibition第３４回大観展を終えて

This is second time Taikan exhibition for me since I become an apprentice.
As I increased in my knowledge, I started to look at Bonsai in a different way. 

弟子になってから２回目の大観展。

去年より知識が増えたので、盆栽を見る目も少し変わりました。
I became aware of the tree if the tree is for display or sale when I saw someone is carrying a tree.
For display trees have radiance and those trees dazzle people by tremendous impact.
I think the tree has love and a passionate soul which are made by Bonsai artists and owners from generation to generation.
I have the same feelings for my trees. I have some trees but I don’t want to give them to anyone.
場内に運ばれている樹を見たときに、あれは展示用か販売用かという区別は大体一目で分かります。
展示用の樹というのはオーラが漂っていて、その迫力と品位に圧倒されます。
歴代のオーナーと職人の情熱と愛情が、その一本の木に魂として生きているんだと思います。
私もいくつか樹を持っていますが、どれもこれも可愛くて手放したくありません。


Display area has powerful influence on our Bonsai life.
When you said “Oh, my god”, you would see a godlike tree.
Then you would be felt awed by the godlike tree.
I always appreciate the owners who showed us such nice trees.
展示コーナーは可愛い我が子の晴れ舞台です。
その樹に一番似合う鉢・卓・草もの等が飾ってあります。
どの席も見事に飾られており、神々しく輝いて見えました。
素晴らしい樹を見せて下さったオーナー方に感謝します。

 

 The must-see sight in this time was Owari-yaki (Owari ware) and Tsuyama-hinoki (Tsuyama Hinoki cypress). I like Owari-yaki because of stylish design and elegant two tone colors which are blue and white.
I was lucky to see them and hoped to repot my trees into Owari-yaki pots.
The displayed Tsuyama-hinoki was miniature version of nature.
I have wired Hinoki cypress several times and I didn’t like it because the leaves fall down easily when I wire. But the displayed Tsuyama-hinoki changed my opinion and I become to like it. After watching those trees, I went to store and looked for Hinoki cypress.
 今回の大観展の注目処は「尾張焼」と「津山桧」です。
以前に本で尾張焼を見たことがあり、その気品に満ちた色とデザインに注目していました。
今回、実物を見る事が出来て大変嬉しかったです。いつか尾張焼の鉢に自分の樹を植えてみたいです。
展示されていた「津山桧」はまさに自然の縮図であり、大自然を見ているような錯覚に陥りました。
桧に針金を掛けたことは何度もあって葉が脆い性質から苦手だったのですが、気づいたら近くの売店で津山桧を探していました。桧に対する印象が一変して、好きになったことは大きな変化です。


I think if you know Bonsai more, you love Bonsai more.
I want to fall too deep into Bonsai more and more. I wish a lot of people become like me and every home has Bonsai 15 years after.
知れば知るほどもっと好きになる。それが盆栽です。
今年よりも来年、来年よりも再来年、どんどん深みにはまっていこうと思います。
そして、そんな人がもっと増えていけばいいと思います。
１５年後には盆栽が一家に一本あるという日が来ることを願います。

盆栽命の皆様、
盆栽の展示・販売の大観展が只今開催中です。
11月25日までですので是非お越しくださいませ。

私の初日は買い物中毒に陥ってしまい、あちらこちらのお店で色んなものを買いました。
実物を見て触って買い物ができるのが楽しくて、気が付いたら場内をぐるぐる何周も歩き回っていました。

ゆうき祥石の鉢！！ めっちゃカワイくて思わず買ってしまいました。
出来れば全ての鉢を買い占めたい程、味があって好きです。

盆栽は樹の他に、草もの・鉢・卓・水石・鋏・肥料等、関連商品が沢山あります。
展示コーナーを見本にして、かっこよく飾ってみたいですね。

買い物をしていなければ、私も藤川光華園店頭にいるかも！？

盆栽ファンには溜まらない
夢の盆栽展示会「大観展」が
間もなく開かれます。

私たち藤川光華園も例年通り出店致します。
今はその準備に追われて忙しい日々です。

この時期は仕入れの回数が増えるので、私たち弟子は新しい樹はどんなのだろうかと考えながら、親方の帰りをワクワクしながら待っています。
帰宅した親方が車のドアを開けると「Oh~!」と歓声が沸きあがる事は珍しくありません。
弟子は樹を運びながら、抜け目なく新しい樹のチェックをしています。
「どの樹が一番好き？」とか「あの樹はカッコイイよね」など話しながらテンションが上がります。

良い樹が多く出揃うこの時期は、楽しいし勉強になります。
出来る事なら、園内の盆栽を一日中見ていたいです。

Excursion to Adachi Museum of Art / 足立美術館へ遠足

親方と弟子全員で足立美術館へ見学に行ってきました。足立美術館と言えば、Sukiya Living（数奇屋リビング）／ジャーナル・オブ・ジャパニーズ・ガーデニング」の「2012年日本庭園ランキング（潮騒ランキング）」で庭園日本一を10年連続で受賞したことで有名です。

庭園は窓越しに見るのですが、窓枠がまるで絵画を見ているかのような感覚を呼び起こし、広く奥行きのある庭園は“生きた絵画”になり大変に素晴らしいものでした。紅葉が一番綺麗な時期でしたので、真っ赤に色づいたモミジは庭園に季節感を添えていて美しさが際立っていました。モミジの葉刈りが大好きな私は、刈りたい気持ちを抑えるのに必死でした。
　最も印象に残ったものは赤松です。赤松の幹肌はそれは美しい赤色をしていて、妖艶に佇むその姿から雌松と呼ばれているのが初めて分かったような気がします。

日本に住んでいながら日本庭園を見る機会は滅多にありませんので、今回の遠足は楽しい思い出と共に良い学習ができたと思います。親方に感謝です。

All apprentices and our boss went to Adachi Museum of Art to look the garden.
The garden is well-known that the Sukiya Living Magazine "Journal of Japanese Gardening (JOJG)",  the gardens of the Adachi Museum of Art were ranked at number one for the tenth consecutive year.
The garden was awesome. The biggest impression is that the trunks of red pine were more reddish than I thought and it was beautiful. It was a good time to see autumn leaves. I’d like to go to there in different season again.

第３３回 大観展レポート Report of Taikanten

冬は盆栽のイベントが盛り沢山。
京都で開かれた「大観展」もその一つで、関西で最大の盆栽展示会です。
ずらりと並んだレベルの高い盆栽を鑑賞できるだけでなく、盆栽や関連商品を購入することもできます。

私はスーツを着てセールスレディーに変身し、一日中接客業に従事しました。
憧れの大先生達にお会いできたことは大変に嬉しかったですし、テキパキと仕事をされているお弟子さん達を見ていると「私ももっと頑張らなくては」と勇気付けられ、貴重で有意義な時間を過ごすことができました。会場にあった盆栽は、よく見ると園ごとに特徴があるので、面白くて時間を忘れて観賞させていただき大変勉強になりました。

盆栽のイベントは盆栽愛好家だけでなく一般の方も見て楽しめるものです。盆栽と聞くと松を想像される方が多いかもしれませんが、特に今の季節は真っ赤に紅葉したモミジや黄色のソロ、赤い実をつけた深山海棠、ピンクの花が咲くマユミなど、カラフルな雑木が私たちの目を楽しませてくれます。次の盆栽イベントが楽しみです！

Ready for Taikanten 大観展の準備完了

本日、大観展に出品する商品の搬入に京都の“みやこめっせ”へ行ってきました。
盆栽園巡りの際にお世話になった先生方に再会できて大変うれしかったです。
威風堂々とした素晴らしい展示品の盆栽に圧巻され、販売品の可愛らしい盆栽を見ては欲しくなり、盆栽関連商品を買ったりと、一日があっという間に過ぎました。
私は販売を担当しますので、是非、藤川光華園の店頭まで遊びに来てください。
